The Junior Engineering Assistant (Co-op) will assist with performing field inspections and testing during the construction of new utilities and roads, ensuring that all work is done in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications. You will be responsible for preparing written daily construction site reports and will assist with interim project progress reports. You will work with and communicate with engineering staff, City construction crews, contractors, and members of the public.


This role will provide assistance to the division under the direction of senior staff. The incumbent will assist with quality control, data management, and review as-built drawings as required. You will also perform general field and office duties in order to assist the department in the completion of various engineering and operational activities as well as other related duties as required.    


Qualifications: Completion of two years of a post-secondary engineering degree plus enrollment to return as a full time student. In addition all students must be enrolled in a Co-op program with an accredited college or university. You enjoy working in a proactive team environment and have a commitment to service excellence. Ideally, you have experience in civil engineering technology, working in the engineering field or equivalent construction industry experience such as surveying, construction layout, estimating, or construction labour.  Previous experience reading construction and as-built drawings, inspection experience, or familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D would be an asset. Knowledge of or experience with any of the following is also desirable: subdivision servicing, septic systems, soils testing, utility pipe testing, water main disinfection procedures/AWWA standards and inventory tracking.


Other desirable skills include:  Ability to interpret civil engineering drawings, studies, infrastructure reports and manuals for municipal infrastructure.  Ability to interpret and identify inconsistencies with inventories, engineering plans and specifications and physical components in civic and utility facilities.  Ability to read and understand operating and maintenance manuals, and manufacturers' installation guides.  Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills in communicating with other staff.  Ability to use skills in organization, prioritization, and time management to effectively handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.   Ability to maintain an effective and positive working relationship with others to help create a proactive and motivated team environment.  Physically capable to perform and carry-out field work.  Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply relevant computer programs to perform the work, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, database applications, Adobe, and scanning programs. A valid BC driver's license, full privilege Class 5 is also required.


This four (4) month term position starts in September  2019 and offers a possibility of extension. Overtime may be required.


This term position offers a wage of $27.56 per hour as well as 12% in lieu of benefits.
